Justin Westgate – cultural and creative researcher

I’m a transdisciplinary scholar-practitioner and strategic advisor working at the intersection of critical research, systems thinking, and strategic design.

My work focuses on process and translation: bridging critical academic inquiry with applied design methods to address cross-cutting challenges. I partner with research centres, public bodies, and mission-driven teams to facilitate deep discovery, illuminate systems dynamics, and shape tailored responses to shifting social and environmental contexts. With a track record spanning academia, government, and the social sector across Australasia and the UK, I deliver grounded, evidence-based approaches that reframe complex issues and offer pathways for strategic action.

Critical inquiry and systems analysis
Deploying qualitative research, systems mapping, and contextual synthesis to unpack multi-layered social, cultural, and environmental challenges.

Participatory co-design and engagement
Structured, culturally responsive engagement processes designed to bring diverse, siloed, and competing stakeholder perspectives into alignment.

Knowledge translation and strategic framing
Translating dense academic research, multi-source data, and policy intent into clear conceptual models, strategic frameworks, and practical toolkits.
